The tropical and sidereal zodiacs are the two main systems of reference in astrology. They show different signs for the same date, so beginners often get confused. Let's look into the difference and which system to use when.
What is the fundamental difference
The difference is in the point where the zodiac circle starts:
- The tropical zodiac begins at the vernal equinox — where the Sun crosses the celestial equator in March. It is strictly tied to the calendar and the seasons.
- The sidereal zodiac begins at a fixed star (usually Spica, the star of Libra). It is tied to the starry sky rather than to the calendar.
Because of precession, the equinoctial points slowly shift against the starry background — by about 1° every 72 years. Since the zodiac was created, the accumulated shift has reached roughly 24°. This shift is what is called the ayanamsha.
Why the signs do not coincide for the same date
Consider a birth date of April 10:
- In the tropical system the Sun is in Aries (which spans March 21 – April 19).
- In the sidereal system the Sun is shifted 24° back and ends up in Pisces.
One and the same person can turn out to be both an Aries and a Pisces — that is not a mistake, just a different starting point.

How this affects the lunar calendar
The Moon's position within a sign also changes with the chosen system. For example, a day of "Moon in Taurus" under the tropical system may turn out to be "Moon in Aries" in the sidereal one.
