What did the Chaldeans give to science and culture?

  • Zodiac. Chaldean astronomers divided the path of the Moon and planets across the sky into 12 constellations — the prototype of the zodiac signs that we still use today.
  • Lunisolar calendar. They calculated the reconciliation of lunar months with the solar year, introducing a system of leap months so that the calendar would not "drift" with the seasons.
  • Planetary periods. The Chaldeans knew that Saturn orbits the sky in about 30 years, Jupiter in 12, and linked these numbers to age and life events. From here, the astrological "ages" of the planets were born later.
  • Seven-fold division of time. Seven "planetary" days of the week, seven daytime "double hours" in the Babylonian division of the day — these are the roots of our week and planetary hours.

When the Greeks became acquainted with Babylonian science, they were amazed by the accuracy of Chaldean predictions. In Greek and Roman texts, "Chaldean" very quickly came to mean "astrologer" in general, and not a resident of a specific region.

Signs of this shift are visible in ancient literature:

  • Cicero in the treatise "On Divination" writes about the Chaldeans as "people who made a science of prediction from many years of observations."
  • Pliny the Elder in "Natural History" calls Chaldean science the "oldest form of astrology."
  • Diogenes Laertius reports that the Greeks considered the Chaldeans "fathers of astronomy" along with the Egyptians.
  • Lucian and other satirists ridicule "Chaldeans" as charlatans — a sign that the word had already lost its specific meaning.

Thus, the term passed from an ethnonym (the name of a people) through a professionalism (priest-astronomers) to a common noun (astrologer). In the Middle Ages, European authors inherited this word, which is why they called the order of the seven planets "Chaldean," although it finally took shape in Hellenistic astronomy.

How the Chaldeans predicted the future

The predictive practice of the Chaldeans was twofold: on the one hand, omens, on the other, the first real horoscopes.

Omens are the interpretation of celestial phenomena as signs from the gods. For centuries, the Chaldeans accumulated records of the form: "if the Moon is eclipsed in such and such a month — there will be a famine in such and such a country." Such texts are combined into large volumes, the most famous of which is "Enuma Anu Enlil," a collection of about seven thousand omens recorded on dozens of clay tablets. This was not astrology in the modern sense, but a catalog of correspondences between celestial events and earthly ones.

Horoscopes appeared later, around the 5th century BC. Chaldean astronomers realized: the position of the planets at the moment of a person's birth can be calculated in advance and linked to fate. Preserved Babylonian horoscopes contain the positions of the Moon and planets at the time of birth, and sometimes forecasts for the future. It is these tablets that are considered the direct ancestors of modern horoscopes.

Mathematics of Chaldean astronomers

The method by which the Chaldeans "pre-calculated" the sky deserves special attention. They did not have telescopes and formulas for the movement of the planets, but they had another power — systematic tables.

Babylonian tables of the movement of the planets are built on arithmetic progressions: the priests recorded, for example, the days of the appearance of Venus as the morning and evening star, noticed a pattern in these intervals, and extrapolated it into the future. Thus were born the first ephemerides — tables of future positions of the planets.

The prediction of eclipses is especially impressive. The Chaldeans noticed a cycle about 18 years long (the so-called Saros), after which similar solar and lunar eclipses repeat. Using this cycle, they could announce upcoming eclipses in advance — and Greek historians like Herodotus report that such predictions caused astonishment.

  • At the king's request, forecasts were made for wars, crops, and religious holidays.

Such discipline led to the accumulation of huge amounts of data. Thanks to this, modern scientists can reconstruct the exact positions of the planets millennia ago — including by checking Chaldean records against computer calculations.
